What’s the difference between boiler fuel types?

How do I save costs on my energy bills?

While there are many tricks to cut down your energy consumption inside your household, it is important to understand the different boiler fuel types. The UK counts a few main types of boiler fuel, as well as many secondary fuel types and emerging solutions.

Natural gas heats 85% of households

Natural gas is the most wide-spread source of heating in the UK, which is why over 8 in 10 households have a gas boiler that’s connected to the gas network. Natural gas is the cheapest energy, as gas suppliers keep their prices competitive.

4 million households are not connected to the gas network

These will need to opt for different boiler fuel types, namely oil and LPG

Oil boilers and LPG boilers require the installation of an external tank for storage purposes. The tanks have to be monitored and refilled periodically. Failure to refill your tank will leave you without heating.

Solid fuel reliance has almost disappeared

The days of coal heating are almost entirely gone. Most coal heating solutions have long been discontinued and upgraded to modern boiler installations. Yet remote properties have almost no other fuel alternative.

Biomass as a secondary heating

Biomass is a popular secondary source of heating inside the household. Who doesn’t like an open fire? Biomass heating can provide heat for several hours, which can ultimately save costs on energy bills. It isn’t recommended as a full-time replacement fuel.
